Kennebec Valley Community READ program
This fall the public libraries in Belgrade, Fairfield, Oakland, Waterville and
Winslow are promoting reading, community and the exchange of ideas. The goal of
a community read is to have everyone read the same book and thereby encourage
literacy and the sharing of ideas with neighbors and members of our larger
community. The book selected is “A Place on Water.” This small book of
essays by Maine authors, Robert Kimber, Wesley McNair and Bill Roorbach, conveys
the delight of simple life on a small pond in Maine.
The program runs through October 30th. The authors will read and autograph books
at Belgrade Public Library on Saturday, October 8th at 4 p.m. Each participating
library will host book talks and programs that highlight various ways to enjoy
Maine’s great outdoors, such as fly fishing, pond wildlife, and hiking trails.
Schedules and copies of the book are available at participating libraries.

Penobscot and Casco Bay Island Libraries
Sept. 27th Cherie Galyean, Island Institute Library Coordinator, arranged for
librarians & board members from Islesford, Great Cranberry, Frenchboro,
Swan's Island, Monhegan, Vinylhaven, Long Island, Peake's Island & several
people from The Island Institute in Rockland to tour The Islesford Lib., Great
Cranberry Lib. & Swan's Island Lib. All island librarians in Penobscot and
Casco Bay were invited, but some were not able to be with us. We made the tour
aboard The Beal & Bunker Mailboat Ferry to Islesford & Cranberry and
then boarded The Seacoast Mission Boat "The Sunbeam" in Northeast
Harbor for the trip to Swan's Island. The Seacoast Minister, Rob Benson, was our
host on The Sunbeam. We had hoped to stop at Frenchboro, but the tide was not
right for a landing there with such a large boat. The day was most interesting
for us all. We exchanged ideas and saw what each library does and how we operate
in small spaces and with limited budgets. We enjoyed the one hour and forty-five
minute trip to Swan's Island despite there having been high winds during the
previous night and we feared there would be a lot of waves and swells on the
ocean. We hope to tour Casco Bay Area Libraries in the future.

In the art Gallery, “Bookmarkings” Exhibit. Throughout October of 2005, the
EMCC Library will show artwork by Arlyss Becker. The theme of the show relates
to work that emphasizes ideas and topics from literary and storytelling sources.
This series began in 2003 with compositions that featured open books. The first
few paintings came from sketches of piled books or open books, somewhat like
still life paintings. Monotypes came next with pages that included faint imagery
traveling across the leaves. Continuing to use literary sources as inspiration,
the artist has completed many paintings, prints, and mixed media pieces that
reflect her interest in travel, storytelling, music, and historical issues. The
artist is gratified to have this “Book work” show in libraries as she feels
libraries are the most appropriate place for such artwork.
